DRUG BENEFIT STRATEGIES

The Rx Benefits Coalition is pleased to present the third in its series of six luncheon forums on Capitol Hill to discuss the structure of market-based prescription drug services. The May 6th luncheon will focus on formularies.

Formulary management is an important part of the integrated process by which managers of prescription drug benefit programs promote rational, clinically sound, safe and cost-effective pharmaceutical care on behalf of the patient population covered by the benefit, and assure that the benefit is affordable and sustainable.

Formularies are accepted and routinely used by hospitals, health plans (including FEHBP), pharmacy benefit management companies, self-insured employers and government agencies (including the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, and most state Medicaid programs). Presenters at the luncheon, both of whom have extensive experience in the operational world of formulary management and Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committees, will answer the question "What is a drug formulary system?" The presenters will also discuss the decision making process that goes into drug formulary development-including the utilization of P&T Committees, the types of formularies utilized in the delivery of a prescription drug benefit, and the importance of formulary management.
